Birth Companion

Definition

What is a doula?

‘Doula’ originates from ancient Greek and means ‘servant of the woman’. Women have always been accompanied by women experienced in childbirth, i.e. a doula has already given birth herself and knows what it feels like to be pregnant as well as to give birth.

A doula provides the woman and/or birthing couple emotional security and strengthens their self-confidence. You could also say that your doula will become a ‘temporary’ friend.

What does a doula do?

During your pregnancy, our main goal is to get to know each other and to build mutual trust. You will tell me your story, get to know your needs and wishes, as well as those of your birth partner. Together we will create a wish list for your birth.

I will be on call 24/7 for two weeks before and two weeks after your due date. I am there for you throughout the whole birth process, will support you, give you strength and encouragement, provide massage, pass you food and drink. I am as hands on or off as you need me to be. I can take photos if you wish or stay with a sibling if the babysitter is not available.

In the postpartum period we will go through the birth again. Perhaps you may need a helping hand with household chores, running errands, looking after a sibling or you want to lie down for an hour and have no one to look after your baby?

What a doula does not do:

A doula does not take on any medical functions, i.e. I do not examine you, make any diagnoses or take on any other medical actions.

The doula does not replace a medically qualified midwife or a doctor, but complements this team. I also will not accompany births without the presence of a qualified midwife or a doctor.

From me

Advantages of having a doula:

Especially during birth, the continuous and dedicated support of a doula has a positive influence on the birth experience. This is impressively shown in a study by the Cochrane Collaboration*  of 2017 including:

  • 25 % shorter birth duration
  • 28% less need for pain relief and anaesthesia (the demand for an epidural even decreased by 60%)
  • 50% lower risk of caesarean
  • 39% less use of labour-inducing drugs
  • 41% less use of a suction cup or forceps
  • 33% less risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience
  • Better APGAR test
  • Babies were more alert and drank better at the breast

The research also showed that:

  • parents feel more secure and cared for
  • parents adapted more successfully to their new family dynamic
  • many more babies were fully breastfed
  • parents have more confidence in dealing with the baby
  • women suffered significantly less postpartum depression
